Serving the Public in the Commonwealth of Virginia

1.  All Virginia notaries are notaries at-large and have authority to perform all traditional notarial acts anywhere within the Commonwealth of Virginia.
2. A traditional notary public may perform any notarial act outside the Commonwealth for any writing to be used in the Commonwealth of Virginia or by the United States government. 

1. Take an acknowledgment of a record;
2. Administering oath and affirmations;
3. Certifying affidavits or depositions;
4. Certifying "true copies" of documents; and
5. Verification of fact*

 *notary directly accessing public or vital records to confirm or validate a signer’s identity  credentials or to confirm facts about an individual’s identity or authorization. A notary may also  access public records to confirm facts about such matters as corporate status, date of birth, or  date of marriage  

1. The document signer(s) requesting the notarization must appear before the Notary Public. 
2. The signer must present acceptable identification.
3. The Notary Public records the details of the notarization in the journal.
4. Based on the type of notarization performed, the Notary may witness the signer's signature and obtain applicable declarations.
5. The Notary completes and signs the preprinted/loose notarial certificate on the document.
6. The Notary completes the notary certification by dating, signing, and placing the notary seal on the document, including the notary commission expiration date.

 Notarization, mileage and administrative fees are charged as regulated by the Commonwealth of Virginia and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Charges and fees will be as follows:

1. $5 for each notarial act performed.
2. $25 for each electronic notarial act performed.
3. Actual travel expenses from home or office to perform notarial acts. Currently, $.655 per mile.
4. Loan closing fees are negotiable.
